PrairyErth
The word "prairyerth," is an old
geologic term for the soils of the American central grasslands. Due
to a drought, the spring of 1994 was a time of expansive prairie
fires on the Plains. PrairyErth represents the devastation,
latency, and rebirth that is the venerable cycle of the
grasslands. Each movement takes its' title from commentaries about
the fires:
I. Fire...from
sky...,
II. ...calm after...
III. Resurrection.
The first movement, Fire from sky,
is a representation of the violent and sometimes unpredictable side
of nature. The second movement, calm after, embodies the immediate
devastation a prairie fire has on the land.
Resurrection depicts the rapid explosion of growth and new life
which occurs
after the first rain.
